Romulea, commonly known as the Harlequin Flower or Frill-flower, is a delightful genus of miniature cormous perennials belonging to the iris family (Iridaceae), native to the South African Cape Floral Region.
Celebrated as a widespread and striking dwarf species, Romulea produces grass-like foliage followed by an abundance of brilliant, cup-shaped flowers that open wide in bright sunshine. These cheerful, satin-textured blossoms create eye-catching splashes of intense color across rock gardens, gravel beds, and outdoor container displays during late winter and spring.
Varieties & Colors Available
Yellow Romulea: Produces glowing, bright golden-yellow cup-shaped blossoms.
Purple Romulea: Features rich, deep purple-to-violet star-shaped flowers.

Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Requires full sun to thrive. Select a bright, warm location where the flowers can receive direct sunlight, which triggers the blossoms to open fully.
Watering
Water regularly and moderately during the active winter and spring growing season. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings, and keep corms dry during summer dormancy.
Soil
Requires sharply drained, gritty, or sandy soil. Unsuited to heavy, waterlogged clay soils.
Temperature and Climate
Ideally suited to South African winter-rainfall climates. Copes exceptionally well with heat during summer dormancy and handles cool winter temperatures.
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, dwarf clumping geophyte. Reaches a mature height of 10cm to 20cm with a clumping spread.
Maintenance
Extremely low maintenance. Plant corms in autumn, leave them undisturbed in beds or containers, and allow foliage to wither naturally at the end of the flowering period.
Best Uses
Rockery pockets and exposed rock garden slopes
Shallow terracotta pots, window boxes, and alpine trays
Native fynbos borders and gravel walkways
Water-wise indigenous collector bulb gardens.
