Description

The Cape Snowdrop (Crassula capensis) is a charming, winter-growing indigenous South African succulent species belonging to the Crassulaceae family.

Unlike typical succulents, Crassula capensis is a geophyte that grows from small underground tuberous rootstocks/bulbs. It features attractive, rounded to heart-shaped fleshy green leaves and rewards gardeners in autumn and winter with delicate, scented, star-shaped white to pale pink nodding flowers that resemble snowdrops. It is a highly desirable plant for indigenous plant enthusiasts and succulent collectors.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Prefers bright indirect light, filtered sunlight, or morning sun with afternoon shade. Protect from harsh, intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the fleshy foliage.

Watering
Water moderately during its active winter growing season while foliage and flowers are present. Allow the soil mix to dry out moderately between waterings. Reduce watering as the plant enters summer dormancy, keeping the tubers mostly dry until fresh autumn growth begins.

Soil
Requires a light, exceptionally well-draining succulent or gritty potting mix. Rich organic soil mixed with coarse sand or perlite works best to prevent root moisture retention.

Temperature and Climate
Adapted to cool, damp South African winter regions. Tolerates light frost and cool temperatures, but sensitive to extreme cold and excessive summer humidity. Excellent for indoor bright windowsill culture or sheltered outdoor rockeries.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, tuberous, rosette-forming succulent. Reaches a compact mature height of 10cm to 20cm with a spread of 15cm to 20cm.

Maintenance
Low maintenance plant. Avoid overwatering during summer dormancy when the leaves drop. Resume regular light watering when new shoots appear in late autumn.

Indoor windowsill containers and small pots

Shaded rock garden pockets and crevices
