Red Guernsey Lily Bulb | Nerine Sarniensis | 3 Bulbs

Nerine sarniensis, commonly known as the Red Guernsey Lily or Red Spider Lily, is a breathtaking indigenous bulbous perennial native to the rocky mountain slopes of the Western and Northern Cape.

Renowned for its showy autumn floral display, this plant produces tall, leafless stems topped with brilliant red blossoms featuring dramatically recurved petals and long, prominent stamens. Under direct sunlight, the petals display an iridescent, glistening sparkle caused by light reflecting through layered cell pigments. Widely prized as a premium, long-lasting cut flower by florists worldwide, the Red Guernsey Lily brings an exotic elegance to water-wise gardens and container displays.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives in bright, sunny positions receiving at least half a day of direct sun during its active winter growth period to ensure robust flowering.

Watering
Requires strict dry conditions during summer dormancy. Apply one thorough watering in early autumn to trigger bloom development. Once foliage emerges, water deeply at regular intervals, allowing soil to dry almost completely between waterings.

Soil
Requires gritty, acidic, sharply drained soil mix such as river sand, loam, and leaf compost. Good soil drainage is critical to prevent bulb rot.

Temperature and Climate
Ideally suited to South African winter-rainfall climates. Highly heat tolerant during summer dormancy and hardy against mild winter chills.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Compact, upright bulbous geophyte. Reaches a mature height of approximately 30cm to 45cm with a clumping spread.

Maintenance
Low maintenance. Plant mature bulbs with their necks exposed above the soil surface. Avoid chemical fertilizers, as high nutrients encourage excess leaf growth at the expense of blooms. Leave bulbs undisturbed in pots or rockeries for maximum flower yield.
