Dwarf Babiana Bulb | Babiana Hypogea | 4 Bulbs

The Dwarf Babiana (Babiana hypogea), also known as the Baboon Flower, is a compact, low-growing indigenous bulbous perennial belonging to the Iridaceae family. Endemic to the Western Cape region of South Africa, this unique species is celebrated for its distinctive pleated, hairy green foliage and large, fragrant mauve to deep purple trumpet-shaped flowers borne low to the ground.

It is an exceptional addition to rockeries, gravel gardens, and low-water native landscapes, offering brilliant seasonal color in late winter to spring.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives in full sun to bright, direct light. Full sun exposure ensures strong foliage growth and vibrant, abundant flowering.

Watering
Water moderately during its active winter growing season while foliage and blooms are present. Allow soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering as the plant dormant during the hot, dry summer months.

Soil
Requires gritty, sandy, exceptionally well-draining soil mix to prevent corm rot. Thrives in acidic to neutral sandy loams typical of Fynbos habitats.

Temperature and Climate
Hardy plant adapted to Western Cape winter rainfall climates. Possesses high drought resistance and can withstand moderate frost once established.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, clump-forming geophyte with an upright rosette habit. Grows to a compact height of 15cm to 25cm with a similar spread.

Maintenance
Very low maintenance. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to nourish the corms for the following season. Avoid disturbing established corms unnecessarily.
