Description

Leucospermum, commonly known as the Pincushion Protea, is a renowned genus of evergreen, highly prolific flowering shrubs native to the sandstone slopes of the South African Cape Floral Kingdom.

Famous for their unique, fireworks-like blooms with prominent pin-like styles, pincushions produce a dramatic burst of color from mid-October through December. These nectar-rich floral displays actively attract sunbirds, bees, and beneficial pollinators to the garden. Highly valued globally as long-lasting cut flowers, pincushions are hardy, water-wise fynbos shrubs that make exceptional feature plants, hedge borders, or sustainable gifts.

Varieties Available

High Gold: Produces vibrant, brilliant golden-yellow pincushion blooms.

Veldfire: Features striking fiery yellow flowers tipped with brilliant orange and red pins.

Soleil: Produces soft, glowing yellow-orange flower heads.

Tango: Displays rich, warm apricot-orange blooms.

Scarlet Ribbon: Famous for its deep red, ribbon-like pincushion flowers.

Orange: Classic rich bright orange pincushion blooms.

Reflexum: Features unusual downward-curving flower head structure with vibrant color.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Requires full sun to thrive. Select an open, sunny garden position receiving maximum direct sunlight throughout the day.

Watering
Water moderately during the first season after planting to establish deep roots. Once established, plants are drought-resistant and require minimal supplementary watering. Avoid overwatering or waterlogged soil.

Soil
Requires acidic, nutrient-poor, sandy, or gravelly soil with exceptional drainage. Unsuited to heavy clay soils or soils enriched with animal manure.

Temperature and Climate
Hardy and adaptable across both winter and summer rainfall regions. Highly tolerant of coastal winds, heat, and mild frosts.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Vigorous, well-branched upright shrub. Reaches a mature height of 1.5m to 2m with a spread of 1.5m to 2m.

Maintenance
Low maintenance. Apply a light layer of pine bark, straw, or leaf mulch around the base to keep roots cool and suppress weeds (avoid heavy mulching against the main stem). Prune flowering stems after blooms fade to stimulate new growth for the following season. Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilizers, as proteas are sensitive to phosphorus.

Best Uses

Bold feature planting and indigenous garden beds

Water-wise, low-maintenance landscaping and rockeries

Natural screening or informal flowering hedges

Commercial cut flowers and long-lasting floral arrangements

Large patio containers with specialized protea potting mix
