March Lily Indigenous Bulb | Amaryllis Belladonna | 1 Bulb

Amaryllis belladonna, commonly known as the March Lily, is a dramatic, award-winning indigenous fynbos bulb native to the rocky slopes of the Western Cape.

True to its common name, this classic species bursts into bloom during March after early autumn rains, producing sturdy flowering stalks topped with large, sweetly scented trumpet-shaped flowers. The fragrant blooms appear on bare stems before the winter foliage emerges, creating a striking floral display. Renowned for its longevity and reliability, the March Lily is a prized collector bulb, fantastic cut flower, and enduring gift choice.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives best in full sun for maximum bloom production. Performs well in light, dappled shade near shrubs or rocks which helps conserve soil moisture, but heavy shade must be avoided as sunlight is vital for flowering.

Watering
Requires deep, regular watering during its active winter leaf-growing period. Maintain drier soil conditions during its summer dormancy while the bulb rests underground.

Soil
Prefers fertile, compost-rich, porous soil with excellent drainage. Copes well with less fertile or sandy soils provided water drains freely away from the bulb roots.

Temperature and Climate
Ideally suited to South African winter-rainfall climates. Extremely heat tolerant during summer dormancy and hardy against mild winter frosts.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Upright, clump-forming geophytic bulb. Flowering stems reach up to 60cm tall, with a floral spread of 30cm to 40cm. Strap-shaped leaves grow through winter and die back in early summer.

Maintenance
Extremely low maintenance. Plant bulbs during summer dormancy with 1cm to 2cm of the bulb neck left exposed above soil level. Space bulbs 15cm apart and avoid disturbing root systems once established. Feed occasionally with organic vermicompost or liquid worm tea during leaf growth to promote future blooms.
