Crassula ovata ‘Hummel’s Sunset’, commonly known as the Golden Jade Plant or Hummel’s Sunset Jade, is a colourful cultivar of the classic jade plant. Its fleshy evergreen leaves display shades of green and golden yellow, with attractive orange to red margins developing under strong light.
This slow-growing succulent forms a compact, branching shrub over time and is well suited to sunny patios, containers, succulent gardens and bright indoor spaces. Mature plants may also produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers under suitable growing conditions.
Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Grow in bright light to full sun. Several hours of direct sunlight will encourage compact growth and bring out the strongest golden, orange and red colouring.
Plants grown indoors should be positioned near a bright, sunny window. Introduce plants gradually to intense direct sunlight if they have previously been grown in shade to reduce the risk of leaf scorch.
Watering
Water thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry well between watering. Crassula stores water in its thick leaves and stems and therefore tolerates dry conditions much better than continuously wet soil.
Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water, as prolonged moisture around the roots can cause root and stem rot.
Soil
Plant in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding coarse sand, pumice, perlite or fine gravel can improve drainage, particularly when growing in containers.
Temperature
Golden Jade prefers warm conditions and performs well in South Africa’s generally mild climate. Protect it from severe frost, particularly when grown in containers.
Humidity & Airflow
Normal household or outdoor humidity is suitable. Good airflow around the plant helps prevent problems associated with excessive moisture.
Feeding
Feed sparingly during the active growing season with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive fertilising, which can encourage soft, weak growth.
Pruning
Crassula ovata responds well to pruning. Trim longer stems to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching. Established plants can gradually develop an attractive miniature tree-like form.
Repotting
Repot when the plant becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. Always use a pot with adequate drainage holes.
Key Care Tip
The vibrant golden and red colouring of ‘Hummel’s Sunset’ is strongest when the plant receives plenty of bright light. Too little light can cause the foliage to become greener and growth to stretch.
