Aloe maculata, commonly known as the Soap Aloe, Zebra Aloe, or Bont aalwyn, is a very striking, low-growing indigenous succulent native to Southern Africa, extending from the Cape Peninsula to Zimbabwe.
Prized as a feature landscape plant, it produces dense rosettes of attractive green to reddish leaves distinctively patterned with white “H”-shaped specks. During summer, it sends up showy clusters of tubular orange to red blossoms that attract nectar-feeding birds and pollinators. The plant gets its common name from the sap within its fleshy leaves, which creates a soapy lather in water and has traditionally been used for skin care and natural remedies.
Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Thrives in full sun to bright, direct sunlight. Sunlight promotes vibrant foliage coloration and encourages abundant summer flowering.
Watering
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance.
Soil
Requires well-draining, sandy, or gravelly soil. Excellent drainage is essential to protect roots from waterlogging.
Temperature and Climate
Salt-tolerant and perfect for seaside and coastal gardens. Naturally fire-retardant, making it an excellent natural buffer border for fire control. Copes well with heat, but prefers protection from severe frost (recovers quickly if exposed to light freezes).
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, clumping succulent ground cover. Reaches a mature height of 30cm to 50cm (up to 1m when in bloom) with a wide clumping spread.
Maintenance
Very low maintenance. Remove old, dried flower stalks and offsets if desired to maintain a neat appearance or to propagate new plants.
Best Uses
Seaside, coastal, and rockery garden landscapes
Fire-retardant perimeter borders and ground cover
Terracotta pots, patio containers, and succulent displays
Water-wise, low-maintenance indigenous landscapes
