Description

Pleiospilos nelii ‘Royal Flush’ is a distinctive cultivar of the South African Split Rock Succulent, prized for its thick, fleshy leaves in shades of deep purple, burgundy and reddish brown.

Its unusual stone-like appearance helps it blend into rocky environments in nature, while its compact form and dramatic colouring make it a highly sought-after addition to succulent and living-stone collections.

‘Royal Flush’ may produce a large, daisy-like flower from the centre of the plant when mature, creating a striking contrast against its dark foliage.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sun for the best compact growth and deepest purple colouring. A sunny windowsill, bright patio or protected outdoor position works well.

Plants that have been grown in lower light should be introduced to strong direct sun gradually to prevent scorching.

Watering
Pleiospilos nelii requires considerably less water than most conventional houseplants.

Water thoroughly and then allow the growing medium to dry completely before watering again. Avoid frequent light watering.

This succulent stores significant amounts of moisture in its thick leaves and is particularly vulnerable to rot if kept wet.

During periods of active growth, occasional watering may be required, but watering should be greatly reduced during periods of dormancy.

A useful indicator is the condition of the older leaves. As the plant develops a new pair of leaves, the older pair naturally shrivels as the plant absorbs the stored moisture. Avoid excessive watering during this process, as continually producing multiple sets of leaves can weaken the plant and increase the risk of rot.

Soil
Use an extremely free-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix. A mixture containing materials such as coarse sand, pumice, perlite or fine gravel is preferable to a rich, moisture-retentive potting soil.

Good drainage is essential.

Temperature
Pleiospilos nelii prefers warm, dry conditions with good airflow. Protect the plant from prolonged frost, excessive winter rainfall and cold, waterlogged soil.

Humidity
Low to moderate humidity is best. Avoid keeping the plant in consistently humid conditions with poor airflow.

Feeding
Fertiliser is generally not necessary. If feeding, use a very diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser only during active growth and avoid frequent fertilising.

Repotting
Repot only when necessary and use a container with an unobstructed drainage hole. Terracotta pots can be particularly useful because they allow the growing medium to dry more quickly.

Key Care Tip
The most common problem with Pleiospilos is overwatering. When uncertain, it is safer to wait before watering. The thick leaves are designed to store water for extended dry periods.
