Starfish Cactus Succulent | Orbea Variegata

Orbea variegata, widely known as the Starfish Cactus, Star Flower, or Stapelia, is a fascinating succulent belonging to the Apocynaceae family and indigenous to the coastal belt of the Western Cape in South Africa.

Renowned for its wondrous, other-worldly blooms, the flower emerges from a puffed-up bud before opening into a striking star-shaped blossom with intricate maroon and cream leopard-like speckling. Serving as a living symbol of resilience and hope, this compact stem succulent adds unique visual character to any collection or container garden.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives best in bright, full sun, though it can tolerate light afternoon or partial shade quite comfortably.

Watering
Allow the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings. As a succulent prone to rot if overwatered, keep plants under cover or on a patio during heavy rainy seasons.

Soil
Requires gritty, highly porous, and well-draining succulent soil mix to ensure roots remain healthy. An occasional light feeding with organic vermicompost supports vibrant growth.

Temperature and Climate
Adapted to South African coastal and regional conditions. Protect from extreme, prolonged freezing temperatures.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, clumping, spineless stem succulent forming neat, compact clusters. Reaches a mature height of 10cm to 15cm with a spreading habit.

Maintenance
Low maintenance. Flowers are produced on new growth; encourage abundant flowering by repotting from time to time and refreshing the potting soil to allow room for fresh stem expansion.
