Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as Black Bamboo, is one of the most highly sought-after and visually dramatic ornamental bamboos in the world.
Renowned for its unique, polished culms (canes) that emerge bright green before maturing into a deep, jet-black color in their second year, this evergreen bamboo forms a striking contrast with its feathery, bright green leaves. Ideal for creating contemporary garden accents, elegant privacy screens, or soothing Oriental-style landscapes, Black Bamboo brings architectural movement, graceful sound, and sophisticated texture to outdoor spaces.
Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. Bright sunlight accelerates the darkening process of the canes and maintains lush foliage density.
Watering
Requires regular watering while establishing and prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil. Once established, it tolerates moderate dry spells but performs best with reliable moisture.
Soil
Prefers rich, organic-rich, loamy soil with excellent drainage. Mulch well around the base with compost or bark to retain root moisture.
Temperature and Climate
Highly adaptable and cold-hardy. Withstands severe frost, heat, and windy conditions across various South African climate zones.
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Upright, clumping to running bamboo. Reaches a mature height of 3m to 5m in garden settings with a spread of 1.5m to 3m.
Maintenance
Low to moderate maintenance. Apply a root barrier or grow in large containers to control spread in small garden beds. Thin out older or damaged canes in late winter to showcase the polished black culms.
Best Uses
Architectural feature and focal point in modern landscapes
Natural tall privacy screens, hedges, and windbreaks
Asian-inspired, Japanese, or tropical garden designs
Large patio containers and courtyard planters
