Aristea bakeri, commonly known as Tall Cape Blue or Blousuurkanol, is an impressive indigenous evergreen rhizomatous perennial belonging to the iris family (Iridaceae). Native to the stony sandstone slopes of South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom, it stands proud above lower fynbos vegetation.
Renowned for its tall, upright flower stalks and stiff, sword-like fan foliage, this architectural plant produces loose, branching clusters of vivid, cobalt-to-sky-blue blossoms during late spring and early summer. Highly attractive to bees and native pollinators, Aristea bakeri adds striking vertical height and intense blue color to water-wise landscapes and indigenous gardens.
Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Thrives best in full sun to receive direct sunlight throughout the day, which encourages strong stem formation and maximum flower display.
Watering
Water regularly during its active spring and summer growing season. Once established, it is moderately water-wise and drought-tolerant, though soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Soil
Requires sharply drained, acidic to neutral gritty or sandy soil mix. Naturally adapted to stony sandstone garden beds and slopes.
Temperature and Climate
Hardy and well-adapted to South African winter-rainfall and coastal climate conditions. Tolerates summer heat and light frost comfortably.
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Tall, upright, clumping evergreen rhizome. Reaches a mature height of 1m to 1.5m with a spread of 30cm to 50cm.
Maintenance
Low maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks and old outer foliage to maintain a clean appearance. Avoid heavy phosphorus fertilizers, as fynbos species prefer low-nutrient conditions.
Best Uses
Architectural feature plant in fynbos and indigenous gardens
Background planting in mixed borders and water-wise flower beds
Rockery slopes and gravel garden landscapes
Large containers and patio planters.
