Growing Conditions

Light: Requires full sun (minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) to promote healthy foliage and robust blooms.

Water: Water deeply once a week during dry establishment phases. Requires exceptional soil drainage; never allow roots to stand in water.

Soil: Prefers well-draining, acidic, sandy or gravelly nutrient-poor soil. Strictly avoid adding compost, animal manure, or high-phosphorus fertilizers.

Temperature and Climate: Highly adapted to South African Mediterranean and coastal conditions. Tolerates heat well and handles light frost once fully established.

Growth Habit and Mature Size

Growth Habit: Multi-stemmed, erect woody shrub.

Mature Size: Reaches approximately 1.0 m to 1.5 m in height and spread at full maturity.

Maintenance

Pruning: Prune flowering stems back after blooms fade to stimulate new growth and future flower development.

Feeding: Do not apply standard garden fertilizers or phosphorus-rich feeds, as proteas are sensitive to root burn from phosphorus.

Root Care: Avoid disturbing or digging near the delicate, shallow root system.
