Parrot Gladiolus Corm | Gladiolus Dalenii | 3 Corms

Gladiolus dalenii, widely known as the Parrot Gladiolus or African Gladiolus, is one of the most widely distributed and iconic indigenous flowering bulbs across South Africa.

Celebrated for its spectacular, exotic-looking floral spikes, this summer-growing species produces large, hooded blossoms in fiery shades of red, orange, and golden yellow that strongly resemble the bright plumage of tropical parrots. Emerging above tall, sword-shaped green leaves during summer, these showy flowers attract sunbirds and pollinators while making exceptionally grand cut flower arrangements.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives best in full sun receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for robust stem development and maximum bloom intensity.

Watering
Water regularly and deeply during its active spring and summer growing season. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings, and keep the corm completely dry during winter dormancy.

Soil
Requires loose, compost-rich, fertile soil with excellent drainage. Performs exceptionally well in loamy or sandy garden beds.

Temperature and Climate
Tolerates heat extremely well during summer. Copes with mild winter frost when underground corms remain dry during dormancy.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Tall, upright, structural perennial corm. Reaches a mature height of 1m to 1.5m with a spread of 20cm to 30cm.

Maintenance
Low to moderate maintenance. Sturdy stems usually support themselves, though staking may be beneficial in windy garden exposures. Allow foliage to die back naturally at the end of autumn before removing dry leaves.
