Nerine humilis, commonly known as the Pink Spider Lily, is a charming, low-growing indigenous bulb native to the mountain slopes of the Western Cape.
Prized by plant collectors and indigenous gardening enthusiasts, this winter-growing bulb produces slender flowering stems topped with umbels of delicate, frilled pink flowers with recurved petals in mid-to-late autumn. The eye-catching blossoms emerge on leafless stems, creating a striking burst of seasonal color, followed by narrow, strap-like green foliage through winter.
Growing Conditions & Care
Light
Thrives in bright, sunny positions receiving full sun to light, morning dappled shade. Sunlight is essential to stimulate robust seasonal flowering.
Watering
Water moderately during its active autumn and winter growing phase. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and keep bulbs entirely dry during their summer dormancy period.
Soil
Requires gritty, porous, sharply drained soil or specialized succulent and bulb potting mix. Excellent drainage is essential to protect bulbs against excess moisture and root rot.
Temperature and Climate
Ideally suited to South African winter-rainfall climates. Tolerates cool winter conditions and mild frost, but prefers protection from heavy freezes.
Growth Habit and Mature Size
Compact, upright, clumping geophytic bulb. Reaches a mature height of 20cm to 35cm with a tight, clumping spread.
Maintenance
Very low maintenance. Plant bulbs with their necks slightly exposed above the soil surface. Keep roots undisturbed once planted, and allow foliage to wither naturally at the end of winter to feed the bulb for next season’s bloom cycle.
Best Uses
Rockery pockets and exposed rock garden slopes
Terracotta pots, patio containers, and alpine plant trays
Indigenous fynbos borders and water-wise feature beds
Specialized collector bulb displays.
