Little White Soldiers Bulb | Drimiopsis Maculata | 3 Bulbs

Drimiopsis maculata, commonly known as Little White Soldiers or African False Hosta, is a delightfully versatile and hardy bulbous perennial indigenous to South Africa.

Widely cherished for its decorative foliage, the fleshy green leaves feature distinctive dark green-to-purple spots that are especially prominent in spring and early summer. In late spring to summer, dense spikes of small, greenish-white tubular blooms emerge above the patterned canopy, adding subtle structural elegance to shaded garden spots or indoor pot arrangements.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Prefers partial shade, dappled sunlight, or bright indirect indoor light. Foliage leaf spotting is most vibrant with gentle morning sun, but harsh afternoon rays should be avoided.

Watering
Water moderately during the active spring and summer growing period. Allow the soil mix to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy.

Soil
Requires loose, fertile, organically rich, and well-draining soil or potting mix.

Temperature and Climate
Tolerates a wide temperature range and copes well with heat and dry air. Protect from severe winter frost.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Low-growing, clumping perennial geophyte. Reaches a mature height of 15cm to 30cm with a clumping spread of 25cm to 40cm.

Maintenance
Extremely low maintenance. Trim away dry or yellowing lower leaves at the end of the season to keep clumps tidy and encourage fresh spring growth.
