Proteas and Fynbos

Description

The Grand Tamarac (Albuca grandis) is a tall, eye-catching indigenous South African bulbous perennial belonging to the Hyacinthaceae family.

Renowned for its impressive height and architectural presence, this distinctive Fynbos species produces erect floral stems bearing nodding, bell-shaped green and white flowers with subtle yellowish accents. It forms attractive clusters that add height, structure, and unique texture to indigenous gardens, rockeries, and water-wise floral beds.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives in full sun to bright filtered light. Ample direct sunlight encourages strong, sturdy flower stalks and rich foliage.

Watering
Water moderately during its active winter and spring growing season. Allow the soil mix to dry out moderately between waterings. Reduce watering as the foliage dies back during summer dormancy to protect corms from excess moisture.

Soil
Requires light, gritty, exceptionally well-draining sandy soil or loamy Fynbos mix. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent bulb rot.

Temperature and Climate
Hardy and well-adapted to South African winter rainfall climates. Tolerates coastal winds, high summer heat, and mild cold spells once established.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Upright, clumping geophyte. Reaches a mature flowering height of up to 1.2m to 1.3m with a spread of 30cm to 50cm.

Maintenance
Low maintenance. Allow leaves to dry naturally after flowering to nourish the underground bulbs for the next flowering cycle.
