Description

The Cape Honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis), also commonly known as African Honeysuckle, is a fast-growing, highly adaptable indigenous South African ornamental shrub.

Renowned for its lush foliage and bright, tubular flowers ranging in color from red, deep orange, yellow to salmon, this versatile plant blooms almost year-round. It is an exceptional, wildlife-friendly choice that continuously attracts nectar-loving birds, butterflies, and bees to the garden.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. Positioning in full, bright sunlight maximizes flower production and maintains dense, lush foliage growth.

Watering
Water regularly while the young plant is becoming established. Once established, Cape Honeysuckle is remarkably drought-resistant and requires minimal supplemental watering.

Soil
Adapts easily to a wide range of soil types, performing best in well-draining loamy or sandy garden soil.

Temperature and Climate
Hardy and well-suited to South African climates. Tolerates coastal conditions, high summer heat, and mild frost.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
A scrambling, multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a vigorous growth habit. Grows up to 2.5m to 3m in height and up to 2.5m in width when untrimmed.

Maintenance
Low maintenance. Prune back in late winter or early spring to control size, shape as a structured hedge, and encourage fresh flowering stems.

Best Uses

Evergreen hedging and privacy screening

Windbreaks along garden borders

Boundary walls and lattice training

Water-wise and wildlife garden landscaping
