Description

Key Characteristics
Foliage: New leaves emerge as a bright “blood red” or orange-bronze before maturing into long, glossy, lance-shaped leaves that are deep green on top with burgundy or metallic maroon undersides.
Stems and Petioles: Its most defining feature is its vivid red to burgundy stems (petioles), which can reach up to 2.5 cm in diameter on mature plants.
Growth Habit: Unlike the self-heading ‘Burgundy Princess’, ‘Bloody Mary’ is a vigorous climber. It develops aerial roots and performs best when given a moss pole or trellis to climb, where it can reach heights of over 3 metres.
Distinct Look: It is often compared to the ‘Royal Queen’ or ‘Majesty’ but is generally distinguished by its greener leaf tops and more pronounced red stems.

Light: Requires bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light, its signature red and burgundy tones will fade, and growth will become “leggy” without enough brightness.
Watering: Allow the top 2–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. It prefers deep, infrequent watering rather than constant light misting.
Soil: Use a chunky, aerated aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir to prevent root rot.
Humidity: Thrives in 50–70% humidity. High humidity is essential for the large, new leaves to unfurl properly without tearing.
