Philodendron Verrucosum x Giganteum Hybrid

R350.00

The Philodendron verrucosum x giganteum hybrid is a stunning, rare collector’s aroid that beautifully balances the delicate luxury of Philodendron verrucosum with the massive, robust growth habit of Philodendron giganteum.
By crossing these two distinct species, hybridizers created a plant that is significantly more resilient and adaptable to standard indoor conditions than a pure P. verrucosum, while retaining jaw-dropping tropical aesthetics.

Description

Foliage: The leaves are massive and heart-shaped, inheriting their immense scale from giganteum. The texture is a magnificent, semi-velvety or sub-velvety satin, which softens the leatheriness of a typical giganteum leaf.
Colouration: Deep emerald-green leaf surfaces are accented by pale, electric-green or cream-coloured veins radiating from the centre. Depending on the specific cross and lighting, the leaf undersides often retain a warm, faint reddish or bronze blush inherited from verrucosum.
Petioles: The leaf stems (petioles) are thick and sturdy, often featuring a subtle fuzziness or slight shagginess—a toned-down version of the intensely hairy stems found on verrucosum.
Climbing Giant: This is a powerful, climbing hemiepiphyte. While P. giganteum often starts as a massive, vase-shaped terrestrial clump, the verrucosum influence gives this hybrid a stronger inclination to climb upwards. Providing a sturdy totem or a thick moss pole is essential to encourage it to reach its full, giant leaf potential.
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Protect it from direct hot sun, which will scorch its velvety texture, but give it plenty of light to fuel its rapid, large-scale growth.
Watering: Allow the top 30% to 50% of the soil to completely dry out before watering thoroughly. Thanks to P. giganteum, this hybrid handles minor dry spells much better than a pure verrucosum, which quickly collapses if left dry.
Soil Mix: Requires a very chunky, highly aerated aroid mix. Combine standard potting soil with generous amounts of orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
Climate: Prefers warm household temperatures (18°C to 28°C). While it appreciates high humidity (above 60%), it adapts remarkably well to average home humidity levels without getting the crisping edges common to verrucosum.
Toxicity: Highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause severe oral irritation.
