philodendron Barrosoanum
R400.00
The Philodendron barrosoanum is a highly desirable, fast-growing tropical houseplant native to South American rainforests, spanning countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. It is particularly prized by collectors for its architectural look and dramatic leaf transformation as it matures.
This plant is a hemiepiphitic climber. In its natural habitat, it uses sticky aerial roots to scale tree trunks toward the forest canopy. Indoors, providing a moss pole or trellis is crucial; without upward support, the plant will retain its smaller, juvenile leaf shape instead of developing its iconic three-lobed form

Juvenile Form: Young plants begin with simple, elongated, lance-shaped, or arrow-shaped green leaves.
Mature Form: As the plant climbs, it undergoes dramatic morphogenesis. Mature leaf blades become distinctly tri-lobed (three-lobed), featuring a long, prominent central lobe and two backward-pointing side ears (hastate shape).
Texture & Size: The semi-glossy, dark green leaves are sub-coriaceous (slightly less than leathery) and can grow up to half a meter long on a well-supported plant.
Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect sunlight. Avoid harsh, direct sun to prevent leaf scorching.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. It is an easy-going, drought-tolerant species that is highly susceptible to root rot if left in waterlogged soil.
Soil: Use a chunky, highly aerated aroid mix containing standard potting soil mixed with orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal.
Climate: Thrives in standard household temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. While it enjoys moderate to high humidity (50–70%), it adapts remarkably well to average living room conditions.
Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals which cause severe mouth swelling and digestive discomfort if chewed.
