Description

The Philodendron nangaritense is a rare, striking aroid native to the rainforests of southern Ecuador. It is widely celebrated among collectors for its massive, heart-shaped leaves and distinctive “fuzzy” red stems.

Key Features
Foliage: Large, thin, heart-shaped leaves that can reach up to 60cm in width under ideal conditions. New leaves often emerge with a dark pink or bronze hue before maturing into a deep emerald green.
Petioles (Stems): Its most famous trait is the rich red or maroon petiole covered in small, hard tubercles that give it a fuzzy or bumpy texture.
Growth Habit: Unlike many climbing philodendrons, it is primarily a creeping terrestrial plant. It grows along the ground using a horizontal rhizome, similar to the Philodendron gloriosum.

To keep this tropical rarity thriving, mimic its natural rainforest environment:
Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can easily scorch its relatively thin and fragile leaves.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry.

Humidity: Thrives in high humidity, ideally 60% or higher. Use a humidifier or a pebble tray to prevent browning leaf edges.

Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining “aroid mix” containing materials like orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss to ensure aeration for the roots.

Potting: Because of its creeping habit, it often does better in long, rectangular planters or very wide pots that allow the stem to crawl across the surface.
