Description

Gasteria gracilis (commonly known as the Ox Tongue or Cow Tongue plant) is a small, slow-growing, stemless evergreen succulent native to South Africa. Renowned for its distinctive distichous growth habit, its thick, fleshy leaves stack neatly in two opposing rows, featuring mottled green foliage with pale white speckles. It is a highly resilient plant, making it an ideal choice for succulent collectors and indoor plant enthusiasts.

Growing Conditions
Light: Thrives in bright indirect light, partial shade, or filtered sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct, harsh midday sun to prevent leaf scorching and discoloration.

Water: Drought-tolerant. Allow the soil mix to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the dormant winter period.

Soil: Requires a porous, fast-draining succulent or cactus soil mix amended with perlite, pumice, or fine gravel to ensure proper drainage and root health.

Temperature and Climate: Well-suited to warm South African climates. Keep protected from extreme frost and prolonged rain.

Growth Habit and Mature Size
Growth Habit: Compact, stemless, rosette or two-ranked (distichous) clumping succulent.

Mature Size: Reaches an average height of 10–15 cm with offsetting clumps developing over time.

Maintenance
Pruning: Minimal maintenance required. Gently remove dry or damaged bottom leaves if necessary.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when offsets crowd the container, using fresh well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes.

Feeding: Apply a diluted, balanced liquid succulent fertilizer once or twice during the active spring and summer growing season.

Best Uses
Ideal for indoor windowsills, office desks, patio container gardens, shade-tolerant succulent collections, terrariums, and dish gardens.
