Ferocactus horridus – Care Instructions

Light:
Thrives in full sun. Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, place in the brightest spot possible (north-facing window in the Southern Hemisphere works well).

Watering:
Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In summer, this may be every 10–14 days; in winter, reduce watering drastically (once a month or less).

Soil:
Use a well-draining cactus mix. A gritty blend with sand, pumice, or perlite is ideal to prevent root rot.

Temperature:
Prefers warm conditions (20–35°C). Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to around 5°C if kept dry, but protect from frost.

Feeding:
Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) once a month.

Potting:
Ensure the pot has good drainage. Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.

General Tips:

Avoid overwatering—this is the most common cause of problems.
Handle with care—its hooked spines are very sharp.
Provide good airflow to keep the plant healthy.

It’s a tough, low-maintenance cactus when kept on the dry and sunny side.
