Anthurium Coriaceum

R400.00

Anthurium coriaceum, commonly known as the Paddle-leaf Anthurium or Leatherleaf Anthurium, is a striking tropical plant native to the rainforests of southeast Brazil. Belonging to the “bird’s nest” section of Anthuriums (Pachyneurium), it stands out due to its upright, thick, cardboard-like growth habit and matte green leaves that feel remarkably like tough leather. Unlike the colorful flowering varieties, this species is grown primarily for its structural, architectural foliage.

Description

Key Features
Leathery Foliage: Leaves are erect, elongated, paddle-shaped, and slightly velvety to the touch, with a highly prominent central mid-vein.
Growth Form: Grows in a rosette pattern resembling a bird’s nest, stretching 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 feet) tall and wide.
Unique Blooms: It produces subtle chocolate and green inflorescences (spathes and spadices) during spring and summer rather than bright red flowers.
Resilience: Its exceptionally thick leaves store water efficiently, making it more forgiving to dry indoor air and minor watering neglect than thinner-leafed aroids.

Essential Care Guide
To ensure your plant thrives, mimic its natural subtropical, epiphytic habitat:
Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorching.
Watering: Water thoroughly once the top few centimeters of the substrate dry out (typically 1–2 times a week). Never let the roots sit in stagnant water.
Soil Mix: Use a highly aerated, well-draining substrate rich in organic matter. A mixture of orchid bark, perlite, charcoal, and peat moss works best.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives best between 18°C and 27°C. While it tolerates lower household humidity better than other Anthuriums, it prefers ambient humidity above 50%.
Toxicity: Contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from pets and children, as ingestion causes severe mouth irritation.
