• Shape & Size: Spherical to barrel-shaped, reaching about 3 feet (90–100 cm) in height and 2 to 3 feet in width over many decades.

• Ribs: Features 21 to 35 distinct vertical ribs that expand to store water during dry periods.

• Spines: Covered in rigid, straight or slightly curved golden, white, or beige spines.

• Common Names: Frequently called the “Mother-in-Law’s Cushion” or “Mother-in-Law’s Seat” due to its spiny appearance.

Origin & Conservation

• Native Habitat: Endemic to east-central Mexico (such as San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Hidalgo), growing on rocky volcanic slopes.

• Status: Considered endangered and rare in the wild due to habitat loss and dam construction, though it is widely propagated and grown globally in cultivation.

Care Basics

• Light: Requires full sun or a very bright, direct southern/western window indoors.

• Water: Prefers the “soak and dry” method; let the soil dry out completely between waterings and keep it nearly dry during winter dormancy.

• Soil: Needs a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix enhanced with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.

• Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets, though the sharp spines can cause painful punctures.
