Description

Lithops karasmontana var. lericheana, commonly known as “Beeskloutjies”, is a striking living stone succulent admired for its camouflaged, pebble-like appearance. Planted in a 7.5cm pot, this compact species is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of mimicry plants.

Like all Lithops, it has evolved to resemble the stones of its native habitat, helping it avoid grazing animals. Its paired, fleshy leaves sit almost flush with the soil surface, with intricate markings and subtle colour variations that make each plant unique.

Lithops follow a very strict annual growth cycle, and understanding this cycle is essential for success:

Light

Requires high levels of direct sunlight to prevent elongation (etiolation). In extremely hot climates, light partial shade during peak summer heat is beneficial.

Watering

Lithops have a precise watering schedule:

Keep completely dry in winter while the plant splits and produces new leaves.

Keep dry in late summer during dormancy.

Water only during the active growing seasons (spring/early summer and again briefly before flowering).

Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, as Lithops are highly susceptible to rot.

Soil

Requires extremely well-draining, sandy or rocky soil. A gritty, mineral-based mix with minimal organic material is essential.

Although often confused with Lithops lesliei, this variety shares similar care requirements. Lithops lesliei is widely regarded as one of the easier species to grow, making living stones a rewarding choice for patient collectors and sunny indoor windowsills.

This plant is ideal for:
• Living stone collectors
• Sunny windowsills
• Minimalist succulent displays
• Low-water gardens

A fascinating, slow-growing succulent that rewards careful growers with subtle beauty and seasonal transformation.
