The Antler Reishi Grow Block allows you to grow one of the most distinctive forms of Reishi mushroom at home.
Antler Reishi is an upright-growing form of Ganoderma lucidum, or closely related Ganoderma species, characterised by long, branching fruiting bodies that resemble antlers or coral rather than the traditional flat, fan-shaped Reishi conk.
This unusual growth form is particularly popular with medicinal-mushroom growers and collectors because of its sculptural appearance and relatively low spore production.
What Makes Antler Reishi Different?
Traditional Reishi mushrooms usually develop broad, shelf-like caps known as conks.
Antler Reishi develops differently, producing slender, upright and branching structures.
This growth form is encouraged by:
Elevated carbon dioxide levels
Limited fresh-air exchange
Lower light conditions
Growing within a controlled bag environment
If fresh-air exchange is increased later in the growing process, the tips may begin expanding and developing into more conventional Reishi caps.
Low Spore Production
Because Antler Reishi generally does not develop a large, mature cap, it typically produces far fewer airborne spores than fully developed conk-form Reishi.
This can make it particularly appealing for indoor growers who want to cultivate Reishi while reducing heavy spore release.
Naturally Occurring Compounds
Reishi mushrooms naturally contain a range of compounds that have made them important in traditional herbal practices, including:
Beta-glucans and other polysaccharides
Triterpenoids, including ganoderic acids
Naturally occurring antioxidant compounds
Reishi has a long history of use in traditional herbal preparations, particularly in East Asian herbal traditions.
How Reishi Is Used
Reishi is tough and woody and is not generally eaten like conventional culinary mushrooms.
After harvesting and drying, it is commonly prepared as:
Long-simmered Reishi tea
Herbal decoctions
Tinctures
Dried mushroom powder
Its naturally bitter flavour is characteristic of Reishi mushrooms.
Growing Conditions
Antler development is encouraged by keeping the grow block in an environment with limited fresh-air exchange and elevated CO₂ levels.
The block can usually remain inside its growing bag while the antlers develop. Avoid introducing excessive fresh air if you want to maintain the characteristic antler shape.
Increasing fresh-air exchange may encourage the growing tips to flatten and begin producing traditional shelf-like Reishi fruiting bodies.
Growing Tips
Keep the grow block:
Away from direct sunlight
In a clean growing environment
At a stable temperature suitable for Reishi cultivation
Protected from drying out
With restricted fresh-air exchange when encouraging antler formation
Monitor the mushrooms as they develop and harvest once they reach the desired size and maturity.
