Crassula streyi – Rare South African Succulent

Crassula streyi, commonly known as the Pondo Cliff succulent, is a rare and attractive South African succulent prized for its thick glossy leaves and compact growth habit. Native to the Pondoland region of the Eastern Cape, this plant naturally grows on rocky cliffs and shaded forest edges.

Its deep green, oval-shaped leaves form neat clusters that make it an excellent choice for indoor plant collections, succulent displays, and container gardening. Due to its natural habitat, this species tolerates lower light conditions better than many succulents, making it particularly suitable as a houseplant.

This compact succulent works beautifully in decorative pots, succulent arrangements, terrariums, and shaded patios.

Why Grow Crassula streyi

Rare South African succulent species

Attractive glossy green foliage

Suitable for indoor growing

Compact plant ideal for small spaces

Low maintenance and drought tolerant

Light Requirements

Crassula streyi grows best in bright indirect light or partial shade. It can tolerate lower light levels compared to many succulents but should still receive good ambient light.

Avoid intense direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water moderately and allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Like most succulents, Crassula streyi prefers well-drained conditions.

Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.

Soil

Plant in well-draining succulent or cactus soil. A mix containing sand or perlite improves drainage and prevents root rot.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced succulent fertiliser every 4–6 weeks to encourage healthy growth.

Growth Habit

Crassula streyi forms a compact clumping plant and grows slowly, making it ideal for small pots and indoor displays.

It typically reaches 20–30 cm in height under good conditions.
