Senecio articulatus ‘Variegatus’, also classified as Curio articulatus ‘Variegatus’, is an unusual collector’s succulent valued for its segmented stems and striking variegated foliage.

Often sold as the Pink Butterfly Succulent, its leaves can display a combination of green, creamy white and soft pink to purple tones, with the strongest colouring developing under bright light and mild environmental stress.

Its sculptural growth habit makes it particularly attractive in small pots, succulent arrangements and specialist collections. As the plant matures, its jointed stems create an unusual architectural form that distinguishes it from more conventional succulents.

Growing Conditions & Care

Light
Grow in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Good light is important for maintaining compact growth and strong variegation.

A few hours of mild direct sunlight can intensify the pink and purple colouring, but harsh midday or afternoon sun may scorch the pale variegated areas. Introduce the plant gradually to stronger sunlight.

Indoors, place it close to a bright window where it receives plenty of natural light.

Watering
Water thoroughly and then allow the growing medium to dry completely or almost completely before watering again.

This succulent stores moisture in its fleshy stems and roots and is more tolerant of dry conditions than excessive watering. Avoid watering on a fixed schedule; instead, check the soil first.

Reduce watering significantly during periods of slower growth or dormancy.
