Pachypodium saundersii, commonly known as the “Kudu Lily’, is a succulent shrub native to Southern Africa, including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and KwaZulu-Natal. It’s known for its swollen, tuberous stem and sharp thorns. Here are some key features:
- Appearance: It has a swollen stem up to 1 meter in diameter and can grow up to 1.5 meters high. The plant produces narrow, thorny branches and dark green shiny leaves.
- Flowers: It produces masses of white flowers with a pinkish/purplish tinge from February to May.
- Habitat: It grows in dry woodlands, often among rocks or in rock crevices.
- Care: It thrives in well-drained, sandy soil, full sun, and requires sparing watering. It can withstand moderate frost and is an excellent container plant.
