Echinocereus rigidissimus var. Rubrispinus — care guide
Light
Full sun is essential for strong colour and compact growth.
Provide 6–8 hours of bright, direct light daily.
Indoors, place near a south-facing window or use a grow light.
Insufficient light causes elongation and duller spine colour.
Watering
Water thoroughly but infrequently.
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
During the active growing season (spring–early autumn):
Water every 10–14 days depending on temperature and pot size.
Winter rest:
Water sparingly or not at all.
Keep absolutely dry if kept cool (below 12°c).
Overwatering is the most common issue and leads to root rot.
Soil
Needs a very fast-draining, mineral-based mix.
Ideal mix:
60–80% pumice, perlite, or coarse grit
20–40% cactus potting soil
Avoid peat-heavy mixes—they hold too much moisture.
Temperature & climate
Prefers warm, dry climates.
Ideal growing temps: 20–32°c.
Cold tolerance: down to around -4°c if completely dry.
Avoid frost when the plant is moist—this can cause tissue damage.
