Crassula expansa fragilis – Delicate Spreading Succulent

Crassula expansa subsp. fragilis is a small, delicate succulent native to South Africa, admired for its fine trailing stems and tiny fleshy leaves. This species forms a low-growing mat that spreads gently across soil surfaces, making it an excellent groundcover succulent or container filler.

The plant produces slender stems with small rounded leaves that create a soft, textured appearance. During the flowering season it produces tiny star-shaped white flowers, adding a subtle ornamental feature.

Because of its compact and spreading habit, Crassula expansa fragilis works beautifully in succulent bowls, rock gardens, hanging containers, and mixed succulent arrangements.

Light Requirements

Crassula expansa fragilis grows best in bright indirect light to partial sun. It can tolerate gentle morning sun but should be protected from intense afternoon heat.

Watering

Water moderately and allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Like most succulents, it prefers well-drained soil and does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Reduce watering during winter.

Soil

Plant in well-draining succulent or cactus soil. A mix containing sand, pumice, or perlite improves drainage and prevents root rot.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced succulent fertiliser every 4–6 weeks to encourage healthy growth.

Growth Habit

This species forms a low, spreading mat that gently trails over the edges of containers.

Typical height: 5–10 cm
Spread: 20–40 cm

Because of its fragile stems, it is best handled carefully when transplanting.
