How to Use the Business in a Box – 1000 Vegetable Kit
Preparation
Choose a dry, protected area (away from rain and pets) with a solid base and plenty of natural light.
Place the 3 coir bricks into a large 20-litre plastic container and fill halfway with water.
As the coir expands, add more water if needed (blocks will make 21 litres).
After 12-24 hours, drain any excess water and spread the coir on a clean surface.
Fill the trays by gently rubbing coir into the cavities.
Do not compress the coir. Instead, lift the tray 10 cm off the ground and drop it occasionally to allow air pockets to form.
Wipe off any excess coir so each cavity remains separate.
Sowing
Place one seed in the centre of each cavity and gently press it into the coir, only as deep as the seed itself.
Lightly sprinkle coir over the seeds to cover them.
Spray lightly with water and place the tray in your chosen area.
Monitor moisture levels throughout the day and apply a light spray if needed.
Seeds will germinate within a few days.
Growing
Keep an eye on moisture levels and water when the coir starts drying out.
Avoid overwatering.
Once a week, mix 1 spoon of Multisol “P” into 10 litres of water and use as one of your waterings.
Monitor daily for pests and diseases.
After 6 weeks, the seedlings should form a plug and be ready for sale.
Ready to Sell
Ensure seedlings are well-watered before removing them from trays.
Gently pull out the seedling, or use a dibble stick from the bottom to assist.
Wrap the root ball in wet newspaper for the customer.
Customers can plant the next day if they store the seedling in a safe, protected area overnight.
What Your Customer Needs to Know
Before planting, loosen the soil to a spade’s depth.
Ensure the planting area is well-watered, as well as the seedling plug.
Plant at the same depth as the root ball—not deeper.
Lightly press the soil around the seedling for support.
Water regularly for the first 5 days.
After one week, start adding a little kraal manure or fertilizer.
Monitor daily for pests and diseases and treat any issues promptly.
After a few weeks—happy eating!
